Smart Box Industries LLC, the region’s premier manufacturer of urban architectural spaces with shipping containers, revealed a first of its kind, cutting edge public toilet unit conceptualised specifically for smart cities, at the Water, Energy, Technology and Environment Exhibition (WETEX) 2015.
Converted from a 20 ft shipping container, the ‘plug & play’ smart public toilet is a fully self-contained model that can either be free-standing or integrated to the city’s utilities, and allows for easy deployment anywhere. Similar to the chemical toilets that are used for events, the unit has been designed keeping in mind the singular requirements of a growing metropolis such as Dubai.
Arjun Menon, Managing Director – Smart Box Inudstries LLC said: “Hygienic, easy to maintain public toilets are a basic need of any city, and at the moment, our options are limited to malls and metro stations. At Smart Box, we have been studying these requirements, and have come up with a model that not only aligns with Dubai’s Vision 2020, but meets the demands of the global citizen in terms of design and facilities.”
Apart from incorporating the latest in terms of technology, the smart toilet unit sports green elements that are inherent to all Smart Box products. Made of upcycled shipping container, the unit has a combination of solar lighting and LED lights, low power air-conditioning system, low water flushes and insulated spaces. In addition to these, the unit also has water-saving features such as sensor-controlled wash basin taps and urinal valves.
Formed under the directives of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance, and President of DEWA, WETEX has become the largest event of its kind in the region, attracting thousands of exhibitors and visitors annually.
Themed ‘At the forefront of sustainability’, the seventeenth edition of WETEX has 1,500 exhibitors from 42 countries. The event additionally offers an ideal environment to ‘discuss plans for a sustainable future, aiming to draw a roadmap for a green economy.’ “We could not have asked for a better platform than WETEX 2015 to reveal our concept to the world,” said Menon.
Dubai-based Smart Box Industries LLC has been actively innovating and promoting a host of green and sustainable living options using upcycled shipping containers since its inception in 1999.
